Mt Cook is New Zealand's highest mountain at 3,754 metres (12,300 feet) and was one of Sir Edmund Hillary's favourites (he first climbed it in 1948, before going on to be the first to climb Mt Everest in 1953)

Mount Cook AorakiMt Cook sits within the Mt Cook National Park, and has the company of another 26 mountains that peak over 3,050 metres (10,000 feet), along with nearby Glaciers and beautiful mountain lakes, making this a spectacular place to visit at any time of the year.

Leaving Christchurch early, we travel through the spectacular scenery of the Canterbury Plains, the largest level area in New Zealand, and once the "Granary to New Zealand", where most of the Wheat, Oats, and other Grains were grown for the growing nation. Across the Plains and into the lush and fertile foothills of the Southern Alps, through the town of Geraldine and on towards the "MacKenzie Country", climbing in altitude as we drive towards the mountains.

Lake Tekapo in the mountainsWe travel through Fairlie, then Burkes Pass, on our way to the Lake Tekapo village for morning tea and photo opportunities. Visit the most photographed church in New Zealand, The Church of the Good Shepherd, and marvel at the glorious vista of Lake Tekapo and the mountains beyond, framed by the picture window behind the altar.

Onwards past Lake Pukaki to our lunch stop at The Mt Cook Hermitage, where the lunch must compete with the awe inspiring view through the floor-to-ceiling windows in the Restaurant. (Lunch is optional) Afer lunch visit the Sir Edmund Hillary Centre and maybe enjoy one of the walks in the area. Sightseeing flights are usually available around the mountains and glaciers, including the exciting glacier landings. As always in Alpine areas, availability of these flights can be subject to change due to weather conditions.

Alpine Lake, Mt Cook RegionWe return to Christchurch with a head full of incredible scenery, and the camera crammed with the photographs to support them. Bring extra batteries for the camera, you may need them!!

Flexibility : Our drivers have the flexibility to be able to customise your day as you travel, change tea/coffee breaks and lunch stops, and to stop along the way for photographs and bargains!! (or just to stretch your legs)
